No slowing down for Gerard Schwarz, South Florida’s busiest conductor
November 11, 2025: Yun Cao has been one of the most visible of Schwarz’s students. He has conducted the two most recent productions of the Frost Opera Theater—Kurt Weil’s Street Scene in 2024 and Jonathan Dove’s Flight in 2025—and will lead Mozart’s Cosí fan tutte in February.

February 28, 2025: Dove’s busy, agitated and complex orchestration is challenging and Yuan Xuan Cao (who conducted last season’s excellent production of Kurt Weill’s Street Scene) led the Frost students in a brilliantly articulated, colorful reading that brought out the best in Dove’s scoring.​

Frost Opera Theater presents lively interpretation of opera, “Street Scene”
March 24, 2024:
Accompanying the opera was the Frost Symphony Orchestra, directed by first-year doctorate student Yun Xuan Cao. Cao admits this was his first time collaborating with the Frost Opera Theater, which gave him the opportunity to work with more musicians.
​
The Frost Symphony Orchestra complimented the cast members’ voices beautifully by matching the intense visuals. The result was an immersive, urban soundscape.
